Lecchi, Giuseppe

Born in Felizzano, near Alessandria, in 1895 into a family of cabinetmakers, Giuseppe Lecchi approached musical instruments after the First World War. In 1923 he entered as an apprentice in the workshop of Cesare Candi, with whom he maintained a collaboration that lasted several years.

Lecchi's style is therefore closely connected with the Genoese school of the period, for instance in using an external mould and linings passing over the blocks, which he abandoned only in his latest period. His personality led him to an extremely controlled and precise work. The corners are usually small and elegant and the purfling perfectly executed. These qualities earned him several awards, including that of conservator of the "Cannone" by Guarneri del Gesù starting from 1949. In addition to stringed instruments, he also made bows and guitars.
