Farotto, Celestino

Born in 1905, Celestino began working at a very young age in the Milanese workshop of his uncle, Celeste Farotti, where Celestino's father, Salvatore, was also employed. Until the mid-1920s, he collaborated in making Celeste's instruments, and only later did he establish himself as an independent luthier, winning several awards during his long and productive career.

Initially, his style followed that of his uncle, with a strong influence from Turin violin making, particularly that of Giovanni Francesco Pressenda. Later, however, Celestino moved towards a more Milanese style, drawing inspiration from the masters who had worked for the Bisiach family. Celestino Farotto also made instruments for this important Milanese workshop, in particular violas based on a peculiar model that were then sold as works by Ferruccio Varagnolo, as well as copies of other makers.
