Gianotti, Alfredo

Born in 1923 in Desio, north of Milan, Alfredo Gianotti made his first instrument during the Second World War in a prison camp. Once back home, he alternated violin making with other carpentry work, receiving advice from Renzo Bechini.

He has been professionally active as a luthier since the 1960s, obtaining recognition for his work. The body model is quite classical, with elegant corners and a purfling inlay that meets in an elongated junction. The model of the head is characteristic: the peg box is short and the throat is not very deep; the volute is wide, cut slightly over-square; the central eye is large and ends in a pronounced upper "comma".
