Born in Trieste in 1832, Giuseppe Dollenz trained as a luthier in his father Giovanni's workshop.
The distant similarity between the work of these makers and that of Lorenzo Storioni (who lived in Trieste in 1804) cannot be attributed to any form of apprenticeship, which would have been chronologically impossible (Giovanni Dollenz was only born in 1802), but we cannot rule out indirect inspiration from Storioni's instruments that had remained in the city. As in the case of the contemporary Pelizon family, the Dollenz instruments are rather rustic in their finish, but the successful architecture makes them sought after for their acoustic qualities.
