Born in Ancona in 1891, Carlo Moretti approached violin making in his hometown, and moved to Rome in 1927, where he remained active as a luthier. Although he was self-taught, over two hundred instruments are attributed to him; he died in Rome in 1970.
His style shows that he was little influenced by his predecessors from the Marche region. The model is rather large and full in arching, with large sound-holes. The scroll, on the other hand, is more minute and rounded; the choice of materials and the application of the vanirsh are of good quality. Carlo Moretti's work should not be confused with the recent brand of Asian instruments commercialized under the same name.
