Utili, Nicola

Brilliant luthier born in Castelbolognese in 1888, Utili began as a guitarist and a maker of plucked instruments, and then extended his interests towards bowed instruments as well.

In addition to works inspired by the traditional models, already before the First World War Utili introduced various patterns with a modernist inspiration; these are often characterized by the absence of the corners on the plates, that are replaced by small volutes bent towards the C-bouts. The sound-box, the F-holes and the scroll are all based on a personal design influenced by the Art Nouveau and Decò in vogue at his time. The workmanship is always refined, the varnish of fine quality and the sonority excellent.
