Hopf, family

A family of luthiers including several subsequent generations active between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the Saxon city of Klingenthal, on the border with the modern Czech Republic. Their style is influenced by the Tyrolean school, with rounded C-bouts and slightly squarish upper bouts. The scroll is also based on a model of clear Germanic inspiration: the peg box is curvilinear, and the volute ends at the top of the eye with an accentuated closure.
