Tedesco, Giovanni

Born in 1861, Giovanni Tedesco was a very productive maker who dedicated himself to a wide variety of stringed instruments, but whose biographical and professional background is little known. He probably had a role in the initial training of Vincenzo Sannino and collaborated with the luthier Giuseppe Desiato; he died in Naples in 1947.

In many respects similar to Sannino's works, Tedesco's instruments often bear labels by other Neapolitan makers. The materials are mostly of simple quality, with maples with little figure; made on typically Neapolitan models, Tedesco's instruments tend to have substantial corners, the edges being carved with a wide, flat fluting; the f-holes are open and converge slightly towards the bottom; the scrolls are compact and with a small rounded eye moved towards the rear part of the volute.
