Sgarbi, Antonio

Born in Modena in 1866 and son of the luthier Giuseppe Sgarbi, Antonio was trained under the guidance of his father and moved with his family to various Italian locations: from 1878 Giuseppe was active in Rome, where his son succeeded him in 1890; in the period 1905-1911 Antonio was hired as a luthier at the Conservatory of Palermo; later he returned for a short period to Modena and then settled permanently in Rome.

The style of the family is typically Emilian. The model is narrow and rounded, with long corners and a rounded and not very defined edges. The head is slender and with a softened finish; the sound-holes are elongated and often positioned close together.
