Pareschi, Gaetano

Born near Ferrara in 1900, Gaetano Pareschi approached instrument making self-taght, by making a few plucked instruments from the early age of 14. Although he was also active as a violinist, starting from the 1920s his interest in making deepened also thanks to the advice received from Ettore Soffritti. He then remained a lifelong friend of other Ferrara makers such as Anselmo Gotti and Ernesto Pevere and he eventually retired in 1974.

Pareschi used the external half-mould, typical of his area, and generally preferred the Stradivari model, although occasionally he also drew inspiration from his countrymen Marconcini, Soffritti and Raffaele Fiorini. The flurting of the plates is very narrow and the rounded edges end almost on the purfling, which in turn extends strongly towards the corner tips. The soundholes are positioned vertically and have rather large wings; Pareschi's volutes are also wide, with a deep channeling and a rounded eye.
