Baldantoni, Giuseppe

Born in Ancona in 1784, Giuseppe Baldantoni came from a family of craftsmen specialized in metal and woodworking, particularly in the field of precision mechanics and the manufacture of weapons. Alongside this training, Giuseppe began studying music with Emanuele Nappi during his youth, playing the double bass and remaining active as a musician in the local scene throughout his life.

Although he can be considered a self-taught luthier, Baldantoni's instruments are stand out in the Marche region of the 19th century for a good adherence to classical models and a careful choice of the materials, for which he often preferred locally sourced maple. The pattern of his instruments is proportionate and with a generally broad instrument chest; the soundholes are also positioned at a good distance from each other, with a slight tendency to converge towards their bottom. The corners are generally small, while the purfling is broad. The heads reflect the influence of previous Marche makers, with a shallow throat and the belly moved towards the bottom of the pegbox. The volutes are rounded and quite deeply carved. Giuseppe Baldantoni died in 1873, and his activity was continued by his sons Beniamino and Clemente, also musicians.
