Albani, Joseph

Born in Bolzano in 1680, Joseph was one of the sons of Matthias Albani who followed in their father's footsteps, working for him until the age of 29. After spending some time with his brother Michael in Graz, Joseph set up on his own in 1712, but his premature death in 1722 meant that he produced only a limited number of instruments.

As in the case of his father, Joseph Albani's work represents a synthesis between a heritage linked to Tyrolean culture and the already predominant influence of the Amati family. Their rich, deep red oil varnish remains typical of this second generation as well and can be compared to some Venetian varnishes from the same period.
