Preservation and restoration

Removal of a doubling to the flanks of a scroll by Gennaro Gagliano

The state of preservation of an instrument is the deciding factor in maintaining its value over the years. In addition to accidental damage there are many other circumstances which can endanger its integrity. Primarily variations in humidity and temperature, but unfortunately also inexpert attempts of restoration, cleaning and polishing can prejudice the historical value of an instrument.

Scrollavezza & Zanrè dedicate particular attention to the study of restoration techniques by continually updating their methods and with the support of a network of internationally acknowledged experts. Modern methods of investigation and accurate planning allow us to resolve problems of preservation, even very serious ones, with minimal sacrifice of the original parts of the instrument, including the varnish and the patina which testify to its history.
